SOUTH KOREA – basks in Oscars glory
South Korean film Parasite won big at last night’s Oscars, making history as the first foreign-language title to take Best Picture and winning four awards in total. But there’s more than just an excellent film industry to draw you to the southern part of the Korean Peninsula…
With gleaming skyscrapers, rural beauty, authentic crafts and living history, South Korea constantly surprises, always amazes and never disappoints. One of the world’s largest cities, Seoul is the bustling capital and gateway to the country. Marvel at the city’s sights, sounds and mouth-watering delights of kimchi and bulgogi. Wander the streets of the Insa-dong neighborhood and browse one-of-a-kind shops and galleries.
When it comes to seasonality, the cherry blossoms and fiery red leaves of Japan command the most global attention. South Korea, however, is just as seasonally spectacular – and comes with far fewer crowds. Frigid winters are lent good cheer with ice skating, ice fishing and ice festivals, before melting away into a riot of pink blossoms in spring. Jinhae’s Gunhangje Cherry Blossom Festival is home to a sea of petals, while the historic buildings of Gyeongju (Korea’s ‘museum without walls’) are made all the prettier by the flower-filled trees. Summers are hot and humid, but see a huge number of public pools open in the cities, while the autumn colours are every bit as magical as those in nearby Japan.
The capital, Seoul, is an exciting metropolis of neon lights and non-stop activity. In the south, second city Busan enjoys a pleasant seaside setting backed by mountains and is slightly more relaxed than the capital though still has everything that makes South Korea so fascinating.
Well over half of South Korea is forested which makes it a great destination for lovers of the outdoors. The mountains are a hiker’s dream in spring and autumn, then come winter they are transformed into ski slopes. Rugged peaks give way to coastal plains and a scattering of islands, most notably the popular volcanic Jeju, lay just off its southern shores.
Aside from its cities and countryside, there is another major reason to travel to South Korea: its food. Spicy, sour and sweet, Korean food is a pure delight and you’ll be spoiled for choice with street stalls and markets everywhere you go. For the dedicated foodies, we suggest a traditional ‘hanok’ homestay in Jeonju, a UNESCO City of Gastronomy home of bibimbap.
