The modern metropolis may be one of the world’s most forward-looking capitals, but its history is always proudly on show, too. Shrines, festivals and time-honoured traditions are still an important part of life here – only they come with a backdrop of supersize buildings, sky-high towers and fluoro signage.

It may be impossible to imitate Japanese street style, but some inspiration never harmed anyone – hanging out with Harajuku’s cool kids is the place to start.
