Architectural Treasures

The Belle Époque was a period in French history from 1871 to 1914, cut short by the First World War. It has connotations of freedom, flourishing arts and personal indulgence.

Signature characteristics of the era are present in the palatial hotels that line seafronts, such as the Croisette in Cannes and the Promenade des Anglais in Nice.

A perfect portrayal of the flamboyant fashion is the Salle Belle Époque of the Hotel Hermitage in Monte Carlo, with its skeleton of pink marble columns, cascades of crimson curtains and downpouring of crystal chandeliers.

The magical medieval village of Biot

Perched in the mountains between Antibes and Nice stands Biot, a picturesque medieval village dating back 2,500 years.

It has plenty of charm and history, but is most famous for its creative glasswork. La Verrerie de Biot, a local glass factory, was established by Eloi Monod, starting the town’s tradition of blown glass in the 1950s. It is open daily and visitors can watch skilled glassblowers mould unique objects.

Here in Biot the buildings do not share the extravagance of the polished Belle Époque hotels of the coast. In the Place de l’Eglise – a small square hidden through an arched passage off Place des Arcades – is the town’s main church, Èglise Sainte Marie-Madeleine.

Built in the late fifteenth century over the ruins of a twelfth-century church, the site originally held a Roman temple. The church is humble from the outside with its simple spire, but the interior is mysterious and beautiful, with expressive statues and stained glass.

Along the way, you will pass charming little galleries, shops, restaurants, and art studios, which in Saint-Paul de Vence, are a dime a dozen. One of the more often photographed attractions is the impressive fountain in the Place de la Grande Fontaine. During the Middle Ages it was the most important place in the old town.

Up in the village, not so far  … Where art and celebrity meet

Saint-Paul de Vence

The old town of Saint-Paul de Vence looks like a nest from a distance. The village is built on top of a small elliptical hill and is surrounded by a high wall. It is worth seeing this artistic mecca on the French Riviera.

Saint-Paul de Vence (also called simply, Saint Paul) lies near Nice, between Cagnes-sur-Mer and Vence.

St-Paul is a medieval village, and today it is a real mecca for artists, who have been coming here since 1920. Among others, Picasso, Dufy, Matisse, and Marc Chagall have stayed here and created their works. Chagall lived in St-Paul for 19 years and is buried in the local cemetery (on the right after entering the cemetery).

The village has also hosted world cinema stars, including Greta Garbo, Sophia Loren, and Catherine Deneuve.

The artists usually spent the night in a hotel and restaurant called the Colombe d’Or, which is located in front of the walls of the old town. Apparently, the most famous of them paid for their stay in kind, leaving their works for the owner.

As well as excellent food and ambience, it has a romantic origin story.

Today it is renowned for its celebrity clientelle – regular visitors include Elton John, Michael Caine, Roger Moore and Hugh Grant – but it began life in 1920 as the modest Chez Robinson, where locals would go to dance at weekends.

Art in s smaller scale … not in museum though !

This little village is an invitation to experience art outside the classique museum .. here above aand below everything you need to kow to plan such urban experience. you willl be able to visit local artist and their creations: scupltor, ceramic artist and painter etc…

The True Secret of perfume .. from a simple visit to interesting workshop for the family

In regard to its principal business, the French author Francis de Croisset, when speaking of Grasse, said that “Grasse is the only city in the world where the word factory (« usine ») is poetic”.

The House of Fragonard, a story of perfume making

A passionate dedication

It was shortly before the First World War that Eugène Fuchs, an entrepreneur at heart who had already been seduced by the magic of perfume, decided to set up his own perfumery based on the novel concept of selling perfumery products directly to the tourists who were beginning to discover the French Rivera’s charms. Parfumerie Fragonard was opened in 1926. Eugène Fuchs chose to name it after the famous Grasse-born painter, Jean-Honoré Fragonard (1732-1806), as a tribute to both the town of Grasse and to the refinement of 18th-century arts. Similarly, the choice of name expressed his desire to run his business in accordance with traditions.

This spirit has been loyally perpetuated by the three succeeding generations who have run and are still running the company. At their instigation new production plants and sales outlets have opened in Grasse, Eze and also Paris.

It was under the tenure of Jean-Francois Costa that the Parfumerie Fragonard went through a rapid expansion and modernization. As an avid art collector, during the 1970’s he amassed a large and unique collection of antique perfume related items that has both enriched the Fragonard and given the town of Grasse a new cultural dimension.

Today, Jean-François Costa’s daughters, Agnès and Françoise preside over the perfumery’s destiny, and are as concerned as the preceding generations with continuing to build the company while adapting it to current market needs and desires.

Discover St Tropez Best Markets

The most popular ones

Place des Lices Market
The fantastic Place des Lices Market which sells a huge range of foods including breads, pastries, cheeses, sausages, flowers, olives, spices, herbs, fruit and vegetables. Locals head to the market early to secure the freshest produce. Here you can also find fashion items in that typical French Riviera style. Prices are good here too – a rarity on the Cote d’Azur and certainly in St Tropez…but best come early with the locals to bag those bargains! The market takes place each Tuesday and Saturday morning, from 08:00 until 13:00.

La Grande Braderie de Saint Tropez
Envied by many towns, La Grande Braderie de Saint Trope is, under any circumstances, an event not to be missed. Over several days in late October, the boutiques of Saint Tropez move lots of their clothes out into the street on racks and tables to sell them off at extremely reduced prices. This is a custom that happens in clothes shops across France, and sends many people all-a-tizzy. In addition to all the great bargains, there is a friendly and festival style atmosphere in the streets of Saint Tropez. This event takes place each October, near the end of the month.

When to Go to St. Tropez

If you want to travel to St. Tropez when it is its most glamorous and buzzing, then go in July or August. You’ll find, however, that hoteliers are well aware how coveted their rooms are then, and you’ll pay dearly to stay.

The weather is still good in May, June, and September. Off-season St. Tropez can be charming, even if you can’t expect beach weather.

Market days are a way of life in Provence and the Cote d’Azur. They originated in the 12th century, when farmers and craftsmen would come to nearest market town to sell their wares, or engage in bartering agreements.

Not much has changed since those days, the market is still the place to come for locally grown produce of all shapes and sizes.

Popular Markets & Days in Saint Tropez
Monday
Tuesday Place des Lices
Wednesday Le Lavandou, Bormes les Mimosas, Cogolin
Thursday Ramatuelle, Sainte-Maxime, Port Grimaud, Grimaud
Friday
Saturday Place des Lices, La Faviere, Cogolin
Sunday Brocante Jas des Roberts GrimaudRamatuelle, La Croix Valmer, Port Grimaud

You can expect to find two types of market in the Saint Tropez region, the farmers market and the Provencal market.

The farmers market
This is where you’ll find the fruit and vegetable of the local region on sale, plus meat from the butcher, bread and cakes from the baker, cheeses, herbs and spices. Anything to do with food really! This is the kind of market that all the larger villages offer. Prices tend to be higher than you would find in the supermarket, but the taste and the quality of market-bought goods simply does not compare. The climate in Provence lends itself so beautifully to farming that much of the produce in the market is organically grown and likely to have been picked the day before.

The Provencal market (Marche Provencal)
These markets tend to be much larger, with all the fresh produce described above, with the addition of clothing, fabrics (napkins and tablecloths are most popular), ceramics and other local crafts, costume jewellery, leather goods, the list goes on…

Flea markets
Flea markets are also popular – they are known as Marche aux Puces or La Brocante (secondhand goods). They tend to occur once a month at selected locations, usually on a Sunday.

The surrounding markets all follow a similar pattern – fresh produce around the main square, specialist food stalls fanning out from there, then cheap clothes, household goods and craft stalls for the tourists. Markets open from 08:00 to 13:00 unless otherwise stated.

Ramatuelle: Thursdays & Sundays – Place de l’Ormeau
Cogolin: Wednesdays & Saturdays – Place Victor Hugo
La Croix-Valmer: Sundays
Cavalaire-sur-mer: Wednesdays – Place Jean Moulin
Sainte-Maxime: Thursdays – Place du Marché
La Garde Freinet: Wednesday & Sunday mornings – Place Neuve
Port Grimaud: Thursday and all day Sunday
Grimaud: Thursday – Place Vieille

Summer & Night Markets – Marche Nocturne

During the summer months many of the towns around Saint Tropez will also host a Marche Nocturne (night markets), selling local produce, handicrafts and providing plenty of food and drink. The main ones to look out for during July and August are Ramatuelle Night Market, La Faviere Night Market in Bormes-les-Mimosas and La Croix-Valmer Night Market.

Normally open from 17:00 or 19:00 until midnight.

THE WINEMAKING – Chateau de Marre

THE HARVEST
The grape harvests are made manually to allow to select on foot the most beautiful bunches to bring an irreproachable grape to the cellar. The picking is done early in the morning, when the temperature is still mild. The vine is transported to the winery in small self-elevating stainless steel skips that perfectly preserve the integrity of the bunches. After destemming and crushing, they are immediately cooled to 9°C and then macerated either pneumatic presses, either in thermo-regulated tanks. The duration of each maceration is evaluated according to the quality, the intensity of the skins and the desired color. Then, the harvest is pressed according to the Champagne methods and only the first juices are for the bottles

THE WINERY
The winery is reserved for red wines making. It hosts 44 oak barrels from the forest of Troncais, the largest barrels of Burgundy. Temperature and hygrometry are carefully controlled to make the most of the products.

THE CELLAR
The main winery has a powerful heat exchanger to work the grapes at low temperatures. The ultramodern vat consists of 12 compartmentalized and thermoregulated stainless steel vats as well as 7 concrete vats coated with epoxy resin controlled by the cold for a conservation in peace and quiet.
All these installations give an appreciable comfort of work and especially guarantee an optimal hygiene.

BOTTLING
Bottling is done on the property in the best conditions of safety and food hygiene. The stock is then stored in air-conditioned premises kept at a temperature between 16°C and 18°C.
